I have a client who would like a video background for his company’s home page. In the past, I’ve avoided doing this because it often slows down website load times fairly significantly. What can I do to make sure the performance hit is minimized?

Also, is there any significant difference, in terms of loading times, between a background video and a multi-image slider? I do realize that a loaded question with lots of variables, but in general.

Thanks!

    Hey kelly

Here is my personal experience, after a lot of testing back and forth:

    1) Despite what i have read and heard, background movies that is ‘NOT’ streamed from an external server, is less ‘heavy’ and slowing for the website.
So … direct upload was the way to go for me.

    2) The most optimized video size and streaming experience i get by following this procedure:
    a) Render the movie / find the movie
    b) Upload it to Vimeo and let Vimeo ‘Streamcompress’ it
    c) Download it in one of the ‘Compressed’ options.
    4) Voila; your movie file weighs much less now and has better ‘streaming’ potential and still looks great.

I followed that procedure on https://brokop.com/ on the frontpage, and my latest GTMetrix test says 96% performance.

Hi guys, thanks for your response. I typically use YouTube for most client videos, but with a video background, I’ll likely host it on my hosting company’s server. This website is low volume, so I’m not too concerned about overwhelming my server’s resources.
